@mrhooker on Twitter. Loved the fact that during his presentation scheduled tweets were sharing related links and information to followers.
Spring 2013 – 8800 iPads rolled out to students
*adam sandler video clip* – a simple wrong would have done just fine
Top 20 things Not to do in a 1:1 iPad initiative (not 10 as previously advertised)
http://hookedoninnovation.com/2012/05/01/top-10-things-not-to-do-in-a-11-ipad-initiative/ – basis for the presentation, but has been extended.
1 . Do NOT wait until the last minute to give them to staff.
Communication
parents, librarians, teachers, admin, HR, board, tech department, students, Responsible Use Guideline
e.g. here is 38 pounds of textbooks – year before; here is my backpack this year – 2 pounds (couple of notepads and an iPad)
*iPad oath*
2 . Do NOT expect it to go perfectly on the first day students get them.
Staff prep
3 . Do NOT roll out all your apps at the same time on the same day.
4 . Do not expect teaching and learning to change overnight
Dr SAMR – Ruben P Puentedura www.hippasus.com
SAMR model two ways
Substitution – e.g. reading on iPad
Augmentation – e.g. handing out paper quiz vs real-time quiz
Modification – e.g.
Redefinition – e.g.
The more from SA to MR on estimate takes 18 months minimum
Carl likes to model SAMR as a swimming pool, not a ladder.
Shallow end – SA
Deep end – MR
5 . Do not limit training to summer months
Anytime / anywhere
– appy hours
– lunch and learns
– PLC time
– iTunesU
Carl has a team to support him – the iVengers
Also created an event – iPadpalooza – design. create. think. learn. (Sir Ken Robinson presented at the last event).
www.ipadpalooza.com
Call to attendees to organise their own mini conference.
6 . Do not evaluate their effectiveness solely with test scores
7 . Do not forget the little details
e.g. did not buy dongles to connect to projector.

8 . Do not try to control everything about the iPad
10 minutes after I announced to the district that youtube – request from teacher for monitoring software. Here is Carl’s response:
9 . Do not try to distribute everywhere at once
Every classroom at the same time – it was a mess. Centralised system works better
*Distribution day video*
10 . Do not expect email to be the answer for workflow and communication
99999 emails in your inbox. Carl blog post giving up email for Lent?
Hurricane Sandy – NYC October 30, 2012 – standing outside Starbucks to communicate via wifi
*video – texting and walking*
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jPW8xmI4w6U
Communication
body lanuage
verbal
letters
phone
(new communication skills – who is teaching this?!)
texting
posting
tweet
video conference
chat
blog
commenting
*Non-verbal communication – break*
Workflow
e.g. Email – iTunesU – eBackpack – iFiles <– tradional model workflow
All different ways to do workflow. The above isn't terrible and is a good idea to start here before moving on to…
Workflow 2.0 – app smashing
11 . Do not forget about just-in-time support
Juicebar initiative – area in library where kids can plug in devices and ask trainers for help. Carl didn't do this in the first year – iZombies analogy.
12 . Do not fall in love with a certain app too quickly
e.g. Comic Life vs Strip Designer
2 dollar saving x 8000 students.
Should not be what is the app but what is the outcome for the students?
AVC – app vetting committee, a group of people who try out the apps before bulk buy
13 . Do not buy expensive carts if they are in classroom sets
e.g.
14 . Do not be surprised by parent concerns
e.g. digital parent night – over 100 parents turned up, 15 expected. Parents very comfortable sharing issues.
invite parents uncomfortable with iPads on to the panel – have the conversation about their concerns.
Google Hangouts with parents planned for next session.
15 . Do not assume that students know how to use them
Chaos to begin with. THe goal is to reduce the length and depth of the dip. Don't use it as a carrot e.g. you can put them away until the end of the period then you can play a game. It teaches them that it is solely a leisure device.
iPad Care video http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7KTE8cnkvXM
16 . Do not think that physical space can remain constant
Sitting in rows is not always the best way to do things. Physical shift needed.
Example of teacher who painted classroom orange, had less chairs than students – no set seating plan.
17 . Do not start out with only consumptive apps
There's an app for that, and that, and that, and that. Overwhelming.
http://eaneisd.net/leap/apps
List.ly is an excellent resource – crowdsourced ranking
Blooms Taxonomy for iPads – Cathy Shrock – higher order thinking skills
18 . Do not short-count your iPads on distribution day
*a dark day in our history – miscount video*
19 . Do not get in the way of kids learning
Don't think that teacher should tell the students what to do.
*Lend a hand – bullying project*
Carl was too involved in the video part of the project.
Once they got some professional video editors involved….
Students designed tee shirts. Became more powerful product.
20 . Do not let fear overcome your mission
"Courage is the power to let go of the familiar"
